Artist of the Month for February 2015 is Tonton Lusambo, from DR Congo!
Tonton Lusambo – born Maurice – fell in love with music at a very young age under the influence of his father, a pianist. He eventually put music aside for a couple of years, focusing on other occupations like sport, commerce and, above all, travelling. But music was never really forgotten.
Back in Congo he decided to pursue a career as musician and, in order to explain his philosophy, released his first album. His aim is making people less cynical and more moral. Tonton Lusambo then toured piano bars across Central Africa, participated in various festivals and contests.
He collaborates with various artists and makes good use of the many influences that he gathered while travelling, fusing them into his own style.
Tonton Lusambo is currently working on his new album.
When and why did you start making music?
I started making music in my childhood, age 12, after receiving the most precious gift from my father, a guitar.
Who or what inspired you to take up music?
My father is a pianist and I used to accompany him to church for rehearsing. The rehearsals and the way my father played the piano really inspired me. As he could not afford to buy a piano he bought me a guitar and it became my favorite instrument ever since.
What was your first ever job?
Live or studio, what suits you best?
Live performances really suit me best.
Your favorite part of a music production
Where would you like to live, musically speaking?
Where would you like to play a gig?
All the world’s great concert halls!
Your idea of a perfect gig
Proper equipment and an excellent sound engineer in control of it.
Your idea of a disastrous gig
Basically the opposite, crappy equipment controlled by a charlatan!
Your favorite outfit for a gig
Short trousers, T-shirt, a hat and sneakers.
Your favorite music instrument besides yours
The most musical natural sound
The perfect foreign language to sing
Which works are you most proud of?
I have already trained dozens of artists especially singers, poets and guitarists; I am used to writing and composing for other artists and once in the studio I deal with the arrangements.
What is the most important skill required – besides talent – to become a successful musician?
The best concert you’ve seen in the audience
The Amani Festival.
The most beautiful album cover ever?
Mini World, by Indila.
The last track you listened to?
All of Me, by John Legend.
The last single/EP/album you bought?
Nkolo, by Lokua Kanza.
Describe your music
My music is research-based-music that consists of producing songs that are different from the ones of other artists. I draw from myself, from vibrations inside me to compose songs without imitating others because even twins are different as there are not two people who are alike.
